POWERS LEADER PROJECT

Helping leaders be their best self

Josh's Story

From Chaos to Calm through Presence, Balance, and Growth

Forged in the fires of combat, I learned the foundations of leadership on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan over the course of more than three years. The odds were often steep, and every decision carried life-or-death consequences. During this time, I developed a profound understanding of attention to detail, grit, discipline, and leading large teams. My journey is marked by victories and camaraderie alongside moments of defeat, loss, and grief.

During this same period, I suffered multiple combat-related traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), which were later diagnosed as severe brain damage with significant cognitive impacts.

In the latter half of my career, I transitioned to working at the strategic level, contributing to the implementation of National Strategy in the Pacific Region. This role sharpened my critical thinking, effective communication, and ability to solve complex problems through decisive action.

While I learned invaluable lessons over the years, it became increasingly clear that something was wrong. I struggled with concentration and grew more irritable in professional settings. I believed that working harder would yield better results, but I was only burning myself out. Despite maintaining elite performance on the outside, internally, I was deteriorating.

After more than 20 years of service, I made the decision to transition out of the Army. Around the same time, my TBIs were formally diagnosed, and I began receiving care at Walter Reed's Traumatic Brain Injury Ward. One of the most significant revelations was understanding how my brain injuries were intertwined with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The injuries affected my mood, which disrupted my sleep, and the lack of sleep further diminished my focus and concentration. I found myself trapped in a cycle that severely impacted my capabilities.

Armed with the knowledge and care I received at Walter Reed, I embarked on a path of research and healing. I delved into breath work, meditation, mindfulness, and focus. I sought natural methods to improve my sleep, health, and concentration.

Through this journey, I redefined my identity, purpose, and passion for helping others on their paths to self-optimization. I earned certification as an International Coaching Federation coach and began sharing the lessons I had learned.

Today, I am dedicated to making a positive impact—one leader at a time.
